Compte propi — J.1
Searchers type Compte Propi, residencia activa or active residency. The official name is J.1, residence and work on your own account.
Source: J.1. Residència i treball per compte propi: autorització inicial — Govern d’Andorra. Renewal is J.2 on the same official index. Law 2/2026 recast the former AFA deposit, for several self-employed cases, as a non-refundable income. The live J.1 page still names 50,000 euros at filing. Official publications also describe a J reservation and a 2026 quota regulation. If the texts disagree, use the BOPA and the quota decree.
What the Government says J.1 is
J.1 authorises the holder to reside and to exercise a self-employed activity on a permanent basis for the life of the authorisation. A newcomer who comes within the quota then set by regulation may apply, under current law.
A Govern news note describes Decret 75/2026 setting a general self-employed quota of 200 authorisations: 150 for foreign-investment cases, 50 for liberal professions. That is the official quota text. Whether a place is being issued is a separate question.
Living in Andorra states, as of its 15 September 2026 index, that Compte Propi / official J.1 remains closed to new applications. A Category D note on that site reports a Compte Propi quota closed in October 2025, a February 2026 quota of 150 places reported as fully taken on the day it opened, and, as of September 2026, no new quota and no official news of a change to price or procedure. The same note speculates that a reopen may wait until parliamentary elections due by March 2027, and that procedure and cost may change when that is addressed. That timeline is a practitioner report, not a Government notice. Confirm on Govern.ad and the quota decree before you treat a place as available.
How long the official page says it lasts
The first authorisation is for one year, renewable three times for periods of two years. After seven years, later renewals are for ten years, except for nationals of states that have signed and ratified a convention with Andorra (the page points to J.2).
Two tracks the page names
Foreign investment
The additional papers on the official list are:
- the corresponding foreign-investment authorisation to constitute an Andorran company in which the person holds more than 34%, and legal constitution of that company;
- proof, within three months of the immigration application, that the company holds a commerce that is duly registered and active in Andorra;
- an unremunerated deposit with the Andorran Financial Authority, paid at the same time as the immigration application. The euro figure is on the live page.
Liberal profession
Within three months of the immigration application, the person must show that they have obtained the Government’s authorisation to practise the liberal profession and, where it applies, membership of the relevant professional college.
Documents listed (non-exhaustive)
The official list is expressly “enunciative and not limiting”. It includes, among other items:
- the completed self-employed residence-and-work application;
- passport, or for EU/EEA nationals a national identity card;
- criminal-record certificates from the country of origin, of nationality and of residence;
- a recent colour photograph to the stated format;
- proof of accommodation (lease, title, or a public-establishment certificate; a domicile certificate if the dwelling is not in the applicant’s name);
- civil-status documents as listed on the page;
- a curriculum vitae with originals and copies of diplomas or other proof of professional qualification.
Foreign official documents must carry a Hague apostille or be otherwise legalised. After a grant, the page requires registration with the Comú of the parish of residence within three months, and proof of that registration within the same period.
Renewals and activity
Official renewal papers ask for documents proving the company’s commercial activity in the period being renewed. They do not set a turnover figure. Related: permit types, D.1, D.4, buying as a non-resident, banks.
